INTERIOR DESIGN INNOVATORS 1910-1960

This newly published book is the bible of mid-20th century modern design. Covering the major designs of early to mid 20th century, this important work examines the period in which the United States was recognized for the first time as an international force in the furniture and design industries. This book deals with the core of the Organic Design Movement and the forces that shaped it, the designers who introduced it, and the designs of the time - including furniture,  accessories, textiles, lighting and architectural settings. Brief but comprehensive biographies of the designers are included as well as 150  archival photographs and detailed measurements on iconic furniture designs of the time.

Interior Design Innovators 1910-1960 is a valuable and enjoyable reference for architects, interior designers, collectors, dealers in antiques and collectibles, design students and anyone with an interest in the exciting period of early to mid-20th century design.

Interior Design Innovators 1910-1960
is divided in to four sections. Part 1 presents an historical overview of the individuals and schools of design that were the direct precursors of the Organic Design Movement - the Bauhaus, the Wiener Werkstatte, the de Stijl movement, Great Britain’s utility furniture, art deco and the designs of such luminaries as Elsie de Wolfe, Syrie Maugham, rank Lloyd Wright, Eileen Gray, Kaare Klint, and Alvar Aalto.

Part 2 focuses on the  major designers of the era - American, Scandinavian and Italian - providing biographical data and examining the philosophical underpinnings of their work. Supplemental data on more than 30 lesser-known designers are also supplied.

Part 3 chronicles the materials and construction methods of  mid -20th century furniture. The authors give precise descriptions and specifications - measurements, dimensions and finishes - for virtually all of the classics of the period.

Part 4 consists of more than 150 captioned black and white archival photographs arranged in chronological order, that vividly illustrate the development of the designs and show how earlier works directly influenced those of the era.

Finally, the appendices offer resource information on furniture still being manufactured as well as charts that summarize in graphic form the numerous overlapping design movements of the first half of the 20th century and the chronology of the designs themselves.
