Miniature furniture is sometimes referred to as a "salesman's sample". In 18th and 19th c. Europe, apprentice furniture makers sometimes made 1/8 scale models as their final examination pieces, rather than full size models. This scale of miniature furniture may have been masterpieces, apprentice pieces, models, samples or show pieces. Miniature furniture is distinguished from doll house furniture by its size. Miniature furniture is larger than typical doll house furniture, averaging twelve to eighteen inches in size, and having all the details of its full sized original. Since very few pieces of miniature furniture were made, 1/8 scale miniature furniture is quite rare with some pieces being extremely rare. The rarest types are chairs, tallboys, corner cupboards and bookcases. Slightly more available are chests of drawers, tables and bureaus.
